It’s been 13 years since we last met up with the Parr family, yet things will be picking up almost exactly where 2004’s The Incredibles left us, with the family of all-American superheroes facing off against creepy mole-man the Underminer, who showed up right before the first film cut to the credits. Despite the popularity of the original, director Brad Bird didn’t know until a few years ago that he had the green light for a second movie. Now, The Incredibles 2 has a teaser trailer.
In true Pixar fashion, the teaser gives away absolutely nothing about the plot of the movie, instead relying on lovable and terrifying superpowered baby Jack-Jack and Michael Giacchino’s soundtrack to provide the excitement. Far from sticking to just one or two, Jack-Jack seems to have every superpower ever invented, from phasing through walls to laser eyes to the ability to turn his entire tiny body into a ball of fire. Those laser eyes are handy when it comes to giving this movie an updated logo for the sequel.
As for the plot, we do know that it centers mostly around Elastigirl, a.k.a. Helen Parr, trying to provide her family with a normal life while also teaching them how to fight off all kinds of supervillains who want to subjugate the planet. The family is still figuring out that Jack-Jack, whom they’d always thought of as their “normal” child, has powers too that, since he’s a baby, he doesn’t really know how to use. Baby-proofing their new house (which Bird described as a cross between a dream home and a superhero lair) is not going to be easy.
Aside from those changes, the message of family is still just as present in the sequel as it is in the first movie. The Incredibles are just like us — except maybe not exactly like us. The Incredibles 2 opens in theaters June 15, 2018.
